The cytochrome P-450 4 (CYP4) family consists of eleven sub-families which encode constitutive and inducible isoenzymes expressed in both mammals and invertebrates. The CYP4A1, 4A2 and 4A3 genes are expressed constitutively in rat liver and kidney, and their expression is stimulated by peroxisome proliferators such as the hypolipidaemic drug clofibrate (Cat. # EI-160), although CYP4A1 has also been shown to be hormonally regulated. CYP4 expression induced by clofibrate is due to transcription, possibly mediated by a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR). The antiserum was raised to the C-terminal peptide of rat CYP4A1 (Cat. # CP0341), but cross reacts with rat CYP4A2 and CYP4A3.
