Scientific Background: | Nucleolin (identical to human DNA helicase IV) is an abundant, non-ribosomal protein of the nucleolus involved in the organization of nuclear chromatin, rDNA transcription, packaging of pre-RNA, ribosome assembly, nucleocytoplasmic transport, cytokinesis, nucleogenesis, and apoptosis. A predominantly nuclear protein, the presence of nucleolin at the surface of cancer cells suggests that it could be valuable as a marker for the diagnosis of cancer. |
