Manufacturing Scientist I – Protein - Ann Arbor

Job description

In this position, you will be part of a team responsible for the manufacturing and adaptation of reagents including proteins and antibodies and kits serving the life sciences market and ensuring product quality based on thorough science and procedures. Key areas of responsibility in this role will be (1) protein manufacturing by following schedules, protocols and SOPs, (2) developing and testing new reagents in support of R&D pipeline targets and timelines, including protein expression, enzymatic assays, immunoassays, cell based assays, etc., (3) protein expression in multiple systems, optimization of protein production, (4) DNA isolation, cloning, sequence analysis, and (5) preparing documents for production records and supporting customer services with instruction of manufacturing manager.

Specific duties include:

  1. Protein expression from bacterial, yeast, insect and mammalian systems. Optimize expression conditions in multiple systems.
  2. Protein purification using multiple chromatography techniques, such as affinity, SEC, IEX, HIC, HAP, etc.
  3. Analyze proteins utilizing Bradford, PAGE, Western Blot, spectroscopy, and spectrometry.
  4. Characterize recombinant and native proteins using immunoassays, enzyme activity assays and cell based activity assays.
  5. Maintain protein expression strains of mammalian cell lines and prepare glycerol stocks for bacterial stains.
  6. Label proteins with various reagents using multiple chemistry modification methods.
  7. Extract DNA for sequence analysis and cloning purpose.
  8. Write documentation, including product specification sheets and inserts.
  9. Follow SOPs and maintain complete, neat, and accurate lab notebooks, protocols and other records.
  10. Take responsibilities in general lab management and maintenance.
  11. Meet manufacturing schedules and complete assignments.
  12. Follow instructions in inventory handling.
  13. Support Group Leader to answer tech support questions.


  1. Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific field with 5+ years of related experience; Master’s with 3+ years of related experience or Ph.D. in a related scientific field.
  2. Experience in protein expression, production and enzymology.
  3. Experience in tissue culture.
  4. Good oral and written communication skills; strong documentation skills.
  5. Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  6. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet aggressive deadlines, and be flexible in responding to changing demands.
  7. Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  8. Computer proficiency required.
