Exercise Can Reprogram the Brain

Aerobic exercise has many health benefits including improving cardiovascular fitness and maintaining a healthy weight. Lack of physical activity and a high fat diet can cause obesity and lead to various diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. We have previously reported on the Anti-aging Effects of Exercise and the role of Irisin: A Fat Fighting Exercise Hormone. Exercise can also reduce stress, improve sleep, and promote the vitality of the central nervous system and resistance to neurological disorders. Cognitive skills and abilities include memory, attention, reasoning, and auditory and visual processing. Previous studies have suggested that exercise can improve cognitive functioning and learning.

In a new report, researchers also found that regular exercise improved the learning and locomotor ability of mice. The mice had increased histone acetylation in the hippocampus with a higher expression of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) that contributes to neuroprotection. Additionally, inhibition of GABAergic synapses enhances hippocampal plasticity as well as learning and memory. This data suggests that physical activity may be of benefit for those patients diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other disorders such as anxiety and depression.
