Piperine is a natural product, isolated from black pepper, with many biological effects. It increases the metabolic rate of fast twitch skeletal fibers, via destabilization of the super-relaxed state of myosin heads, without effecting slow twitch or cardiac fibers. TRPV1 agonist (EC50 = 38 µM), and inhibits human P-glycoprotein CYP3A4 and UDP-glucose dehydrogenase and glucuronidation.
