Scientific Background: | The interleukin-1 (IL-1) cytokine family consists of IL-1α, IL-1β, and IL-1Rα (receptor antagonist) which are expressed primarily by endothelial cells and activated macrophages. IL-1α and IL-1β elicit pro-inflammatory cytokine production and cellular activation, and are the primary mediators of hypothalamic regulation that results in fever. IL-1α and IL-1βsignals are transmitted via a dual subunit IL-1 receptor composed of IL-1R1 and the IL-1 receptor accessory protein (IL-1RAcP). IL-1RAcP is vital to IL-1 signaling, as it recruits the IL-1 receptor-associated kinase (IRAK) to the receptor complex, initiating NF-κB pathway activation. |
