Moderate red wine consumption has been linked with many health benefits including increased lifespan, anti-aging, pain relief, cancer prevention and decreased risk of a heart attack. A compound found in grape skin, resveratrol, has now been identified as having a potential role in the treatment of depression and anxiety. Previous studies have provided conflicting evidence of the effects of resveratrol and the health benefits of drinking red wine. We have earlier reported on the potential effects of red wine boosting the immune system. Currently, antidepressants target serotonin or noradrenaline function in the brain and have been relatively effective for treating depression. However, many patients do not see any improvement in their symptoms. Can resveratrol be an effective alternative treatment for depression and anxiety?
In a recent study, the effects of resveratrol on depression and anxiety were examined in mice. Increasing the corticosterone levels that regulate the stress response increased the signs of depression and anxiety. Phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), an enzyme released by corticosterone was identified as the main cause of the symptoms. Resveratrol treatment (10 mg/kg) appeared to protect the mice by inhibiting PDE4. Although red wine contains resveratrol, high consumption of alcohol would be needed and that could cause numerous health risks such as alcohol dependence and development of chronic diseases. Therefore, supplemental forms of the compound would need to be explored. The use of resveratrol in treatments for various illnesses including depression, diabetes, cancer, and mental health needs to be further studied.
