Free acid form of the cytoprotective PGE1 analog misoprostol. Misoprostol prevents NSAID-induced gastric ulceration. The free acid form is active in cell free assays and in cell culture and receptor preparations (receptor binding assays etc.). The methyl ester form (misoprostol, Prod. No. BML-PG051) is a prodrug and must be hydrolyzed via intracellular or other esterases in order to display biological activity.
