Nile red is a lipophilic probe that becomes intensely fluorescent in a hydrophobic environment, while it has minimal fluorescence in aqueous media. It is an excellent vital stain for the detection of intracellular lipid droplets by fluorescence microscopy, in cells such as adipocyes. Flow cytometry methods using a single staining with Nile red and double staining with Nile red and anti-CD3 monoclonal antibody have been employed to monitor peripheral leukocyte and lymphocyte phospholipidosis. Nile Red has also been used for rapid staining of proteins in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Wavelength Maxima: Excitation 552nm, Emission 636nm
