The purified protein (34 kDa) is highly activatable by treatment with particular active caspases (caspase-1 >> caspase-10 > caspase-8), while having low inherent activity, and little or no contamination with processed caspase-7. The selectivity of the activation process may provide the basis for assays which 1) distinguish death-receptor initiated apoptosis from that initiated via the mitochondrial/apoptosome pathway or 2) detect active caspase-1.
