Scientific Background: | p70 S6K was first identified as the kinase responsible for the phosphorylation of the S6 ribosomal protein. Research has raised the possibility that S6K might, in fact, be the rapamycin-sensitive effector responsible for directly phosphorylating IRS-1 and thereby inhibiting PI 3-kinase activation. Another study suggests that S6K1 activation may mediate some of the effects of a high-fat diet on inhibiting the insulin-PI 3-kinase signaling pathway3. This makes S6K1 a promising new therapeutic target in the fight against type 2 diabetes. |
