Short-chain fatty acid shown to be an inhibitor of histone deacetylases (HDACs). Induces apoptosis. Restores contextual memory in transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's. Induces pancreatic progenitor formation. Directs differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells to hepatocytes with Cytokine Activin A. Sodium butyrate interferes with signal transduction processes, as well as, inhibits c-myc splicing.
