Scientific Background:Periostin (osteoblast specific factor 2, OSF-2) functions as a cell-adhesion molecule for pro-osteoblasts and is thought to be involved in osteoblast recruitment, attachment and spreading. Patients with bone metastases from breast (but not lung) cancer show elevated levels of periostin. periostin expression is significantly increased by bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2).
