Scientific Background:The RecA protein is a member of the RecA/Rad51 family of proteins which are ubiquitous among organisms from bacteria to humans. RecA protein of E. coli is a catalyst of DNA strand exchange in the early phase of homologous recombination involving the exchange of two aligned, nearly identical strands of DNA. RecA is also a key enzyme in recombinational repair of damaged DNA.
