Scientific Background: | The Retinoblastoma (Rb) is a tumor suppressor phosphoprotein that plays a critical role in the regulation of the cell cycle. In the absence of mitogenic signaling, Rb sequesters the transcription factor E2F within the cytosol. Upon phosphorylation, E2F is liberated from Rb and translocates to the nucleus where the latter facilitates gene transcription. Aberrations in the Rb gene have been implicated in cancers of breast, colon, prostate, kidney, nasopharynx, and leukemia. |
