Scientific Background: | Pancreatic amylase is a lyase secreted by the pancreas that assists in the digestion of polysaccharides to maltose. Pancreatic amylase accounts for about 40% of circulating amylase in normal plasma, with salivary amylase accounting for the rest. Elevated levels of amylase are associated with many disorders in which damage to the amylase-containing tissues occurs (e.g. gastric ulcers, peritonitis, pancreatitis), resulting in release of amylase into the circulation. |
