Scientific Background: | Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are proteolytic enzymes capable of degrading connective tissue components. Imbalanced secretion of certain MMPs or disturbances in the differential control of MMPs by tissue inhibitor of MMPs (TIMPs) is implicated in the invasive potential of malignant tumors. Interstitial collagenase (MMP-1), 72kDa gelatinase A / type IV collagenase (MMP-2), and 92 kDa gelatinase B / type IV collagenase (MMP- 9) dissolve extracellular matrix (ECM) and may initiate and promote angiogenesis. |
