Apoptosis Detection Tools

Apoptosis is the best-characterized type of programmed cell death. Because of its importance in development & homeostasis and in the pathogenesis of different diseases such as cancer, apoptosis has undergone extensive investigation in the past decades.

During apoptosis several changes affecting the plasma membrane, mitochondria, cytoplasm or nucleus can be measured in apoptotic cells. One of the earliest events during apoptosis is the translocation of phosphatidylserine (PS) from the inner to the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane that can be detected with Annexin V . Mitochondrial dysfunction also occurs early in apoptosis and is accompanied by a decreased membrane potential and the release of mitochondrial proteins such as Cytochrome c and Smac/DIABLO. This leads to the activation of Caspases and DNA fragmentation.
