Vitamin D is essential for good health. Unlike other vitamins, the main source of vitamin D is from our skin after exposure to sunlight. A mild lack of vitamin D may cause symptoms such as general aches and tiredness, while more severe deficits lead to serious problems including softening of the bones and muscle weakness. A previous report suggested that vitamin D improves gut flora and metabolic syndrome. New research proposes that people deficient in vitamin D might be at greater risk of developing diabetes.
In a recent report, higher plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D has been associated with lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Over 900 diabetes-free or pre-diabetic adults were studied for 12 years. Plasma 25(OH)D was measured alongside fasting glucose and oral glucose tolerance. Interestingly, higher 25(OH)D concentrations were associated with lower hazard rates for diabetes. Adults who were considered vitamin D deficient were nearly five times more likely to develop diabetes. Higher daily amounts of vitamin D are generally considered safe, but excessive levels may also lead to adverse side effects. Further research is needed to assess whether 25(OH)D dietary supplements could prevent type 2 diabetes. Additionally, the effects of moderate daily sun exposure would have to be further investigated.
