Enzo Researchers Publish Study Linking Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis to herpesvirus saimiri Infection.

Scientists Enabling Healthcare. To more than 200,000 people in the US affected with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), our simple Enzo catch phrase may mean a breakthrough in the diagnosis and treatment of this chronic and ultimately fatal disease. IPF accounts for about 20% of the 1 million cases of pulmonary fibrosis in the US, and is characterized by progressive decline in lung function due to scarring and thickening of the lining of the lungs, restricting their ability to transport oxygen to the blood. In findings published last Friday in the journal Modern Pathology, researchers have linked IPF pathology to the presence of the herpesvirus saimiri (HVS) virus, a γ2-herpesvirus that is non-pathogenic in its natural host, the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus). The findings mark the collaborative efforts of Enzo Biochem (parent company of Enzo Life Sciences) and researchers at The Ohio State University, Medical College of Wisconsin, Weill Cornell Medical Center, and Phylogeny, Inc. The group used HVS-specific probes and in situ hybridization to identify the presence of viral DNA in 21 of 21 histological samples from IPF patients, compared to 0 of 21 control cases. Similar correlation was shown with expression of known HVS-pirated genes including IL-17, cyclin D, thymidylate synthase, and dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR). The breakthrough is expected to improve not only screening and diagnosis of IPF, but also holds promise for new therapies targeting HVS replication.

Enzo Life Sciences offers a broad portfolio of products for investigation of viral infection, including BioProbe® and PathoGene® probes, complete labeling and detection systems for in situ hybridization, as well as ELISA kits, antibodies, and inhibitors for markers of inflammation and cell proliferation, some of which are listed below.
