Zinquin ethyl ester is a lipophilic, zinc-sensitive, fluorescent derivative of Zinquin that is able to penetrate cell membranes. Cleavage of the ethyl ester group via cytosolic esterases in living cells impedes its efflux across the plasma membrane. It is selective for Zn (II) in the presence of physiological concentrations of Ca (II) and Mg (II) ions. Fluorescence of Zinquin ethyl ester is enhanced upon binding Zn (II), but the probe does not demonstrate a shift or change in emission wavelength. The probe is UV-excitable and emits in the blue reqion of the spectrum. Zinquin ethyl ester has been used to monitor intracellular zinc fluxes associated with apoptosis. Wavelength Maxima: Excitation 368nm, Emission 490nm
