Scientific Background: | Vimentin is a the type III intermediate filament (IF) protein expressed in a variety of mesenchymal and non-mesenchymal cells, including muscle cells, astrocytes, neurons, endothelial cells and fibroblasts. During development of the mammalian nervous system vimentin is transiently expressed in neuronal precursor cells, often with the type VI IF, nestin. Vimentin appears to play a role in many intracellular processes, recent examples from the literature include adhesion, glial scar formation, neuronal migration, and the normal development of Bergmann glia. |
