Nicotinamide, the water-soluble amide of nicotinic acid, is a component of the two most important coenzymes - nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate. Thus nicotinamide is involved in numerous oxidation-reduction reactions in mammalian biological systems acting as an antioxidant.
