Aminocyclitol antibiotic active against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria (Gonnococcus only). In clinical use for gonorrhea. Inhibits protein synthesis (elongation) by interfering with peptidyl tRNA translocation. Binds to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes. Mutation in rpsE (the gene for ribosomal protein S5) prevents binding of spectinomycin.
