Cancer is characterized by uncontrolled growth of cells that may migrate from the original site and spread to distant sites. Angiogenesis plays a critical role in tumor progression and various growth factors and proteins such as angiopoietin, ANGPTL or MMPS stimulate angiogenesis. Antitumor reagents may inhibit angiogenesis, limit uncontrolled cell proliferation, induce apoptosis or autophagy. But many cancer cells show an increased efflux of drugs which significantly contributes to multidrug resistance (MDR).
