Ubiquitin is the founding member of a family of structurally conserved proteins, the ubiquitin-like proteins or ‘ubiquitons’. Despite the highly variable sequence homology between these proteins, they all display a structural ubiquitin-like superfold. The attachment of a single ubiquiton, or of varied ubiquitin or SUMO chains, via multi-step cascades, to acceptor proteins is now a widely recognized form of protein modification.
