| Scientific Background: | Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is secreted by the ventricles of the heart in response to excessive stretching of cardiomyocytes. The physiologic actions of BNP include decrease in systemic vascular resistance and central venous pressure and an increase in natriuresis. BNP measurements are used to aid in the diagnosis and assessment of severity of heart failure. |
