Scientific Background: | Ebola virus is an enveloped, negative-stranded RNA virus that causes disease in humans known as Ebola virus disease (EVD) or Ebola hemorrhagic fever (EHF). Symptoms typically begin with a fever, throat and muscle pains, and headaches approximately 2-21 days after contacting the virus. This is followed by nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, which is accompanied by decreased liver and kidney function, which can lead to bleeding. The virus is spread through contact with bodily fluids of an infected animal or person. |
