p62, also known as Sequestome I, is believed to serve as a scaffold protein, capable of binding to multiple signaling molecules and uniting receptor-mediated signaling events with ubiquitinylation. Elevated levels of p62 have been reported in a variety of pathologies, including within the hallmark inclusions of various neurodegenerative diseases. Immunostaining for p62 may be an important and reliable marker for the detection of neurodegenerative disease inclusion bodies. p62 serves as a molecular link between ubiquitination and autophagy by simulataneously binding both ubiquitin and LC3/GABARAP.
