Phenobarbital is well established as a potent inducer of cytochrome P-450 2B (CYP2B) expression, and work by different groups has shown that AP-1 might play a role in the induction process, and that insulin is able to supress the effect of phenobarbital. Human CYP2B6 appears to be the primary enzyme involved in the N-demethylation of S-mephenytoin and may contribute to the hepatic metabolism of toluene to benzyl alcohol.
