| Miscellaneous/General: | The family of UBC enzymes plays a central role in the ubiquitin pathway. Genetic studies with the S. cerevisiae Rad6 protein demonstrate a pleiotropic phenotype, including defects in DNA repair, proteolysis of N-end rule protein substrates, cellular proliferation, cell cycle progression and an inability to sporulate , which are all dependent on its ubiquitin-conjugating activity. In mice and humans, two homologues of RAD6 have been identified - hHR6A (homologue of RAD6A) and hHR6B (homologue of RAD6B) . Inactivation of the hHR6B-homologous gene in mice causes male infertility, which strongly implicates hHR6-dependent ubiquitinylation in chromatin remodeling. |
