Scientific Background:UbcH5B, a homolog of the critically important yeast UBC4/5 family of proteins, is a ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme (E2) involved in the ubiquitin modification and subsequent proteasomal degradation of many cellular proteins in eukaryotes. UbcH5B is known to be essential for degradation of many regulatory and abnormal proteins. Together with UbcH5A and UbcH5C, UbcH5B forms one of the most active classes of E2 enzymes. They are associated with the degradation of a number of important human transcription factors, such as p53 and NF-κB, as well as a variety of non-proteolytic ubiquitin mediated processes such as signal transduction and endocytosis.
