Serotoninergic cell bodies have been identified in the CNS of many vertebrate species, their processes being found widely spread throughout the brain and the spinal cord. Serotonin (5-HT)-containing fibres are found innervating the gut in many vertebrates and 5-HT is also co-stored with biologically active peptides in elements of the neuroendocrine system. Enterochromaffin (EC) cells contain high levels of serotonin and this cell type is found throughout the vertebrate gut mucosa.
