A structurally unique marine natural product that binds to and activates PKC at picomolar concentrations, but is not a carcinogen or a complete tumor promoter. In many systems it induces only a subset of the responses to PMA and blocks those which it does not induce. It is markedly more potent than PMA for translocating PKCδ and -ε.
