Scientific Background:p38 is a member of the MAP kinase family and is activated by environmental stresses and some pro-inflammatory cytokines. This kinase is known to phosphorylate ATF2, ELK1, MEF2A, MAX, CDC25B, p53, and also some downstream kinases, such as MK2, MK3, PRAK, MNK1/2, and MSK1.These substrates implicate p38 in stress related transcription and cell cycle regulation. Several p38 inhibitors are in clinical trials for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
