Sp100 is an interferon-inducible protein and a major constituent of distinct nuclear domains, known as nuclear dots (NDs) or PML bodies. NDs play a role in autoimmunity, virus infections, and in the etiology of acute promyelocytic leukaemia. SUMO modification of Sp100 has been shown to promote interaction of Sp100 with non-histone chromosomal proteins, suggesting a regulatory role in chromatin organization and in functional interplay between these nuclear bodies and chromatin.
