Scientific Background:Interleukin-35 (IL-35) represents a member of the IL-12 cytokine family, which includes IL-12, IL-23 and IL-27. IL-35 is a heterodimer consisting of EBI3 (Epstein-Barr virus-induced gene 3) and IL-12 p35. Members of the IL-12 family such as IL-12, IL-23, IL-27 and IL-35 are cytokines that play a critical role in influencing T helper cell differentiation and inflammatory processes. IL-35 is highly expressed in mouse regulatory T cells (Treg) but not in effector or naive T cells. IL-35 induces proliferation of Treg cell populations but reduces activity of Th17 cell populations. A study identifies IL-35 as a inhibitory cytokine required for the suppressive function of mouse Treg cells in vitro and in vivo.
