Plant alkaloid. Neurotoxin. Potent acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Active isomer with acetylcholine esterase activity. Protects cells against hydrogen peroxide, β-amyloid, glutamate, ischemia and staurosporine-induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis. Prospective agent for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
