Scientific Background:Secretory Phospholipase A2s (sPLA2s) are a group of related enzymes that upon activation, cleave an acyl ester bond in the sn-2 position in glycerophospholipid. These are extracellular enzymes that have high disulfide bond content, low molecular mass (14KDa), and require mM levels of Ca+ for catalysis. sPLA2 enzymes play a crucial role in the generation of arachidonic acid, which is further metabolized to proinflammatory eicosanoids.
